Why Merlin Magic was Created...

  1. Share our experiences about the many rewards associated with rescuing a stray or adopting an animal from your local animal shelter.

  2. Encourage others who are considering getting a pet to visit the local animal shelters first and check out the wonderful animals there who desperately need homes, before making the decision to buy one from a pet store or breeder!

  3. Donate money from the sales of the books to shelters so the animals can at least be better cared for until they find their own forever homes.
Do you know the statistics at your local animal shelters?

If not, after reviewing the following National and Houston numbers, you may want to try to find out!

For example, were you aware that in 1997, the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy conducted a study to gather and analyze reliable data that further characterize the number, origin, and disposition of pets (dogs and cats) in the United States?

Using the National Council's numbers from 1997 and estimating the number of operating shelters in the United States to be 3,500 (the exact number of animal shelters operating in the United States does not exist), American Humane (http://www.americanhumane.org), one of the founding members of the Council, released the following the statistics:

  • Of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the National Council's survey, 4.3 million animals were handled.
  • In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else.
  • 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification.
  • Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners.
  • 25% of dogs and 24% of cats that enter animal shelters are adopted.

It is from these numbers that the American Humane estimated what is occurring nationwide. It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States.

In 2004 alone, Houston area shelters euthanized over 80,000 pets.  That number was attributed to the fact that Houston has too many abandoned pets and an animal welfare community whose principal solution to the problem is euthanasia.

On January 26, 2005, the Mayor of the City of Houston appointed the Animal Protection Task Force to study the problems associated with the City’s stray pet population and make recommendations for a community-wide initiative to better protect animals and citizens.

The task force cited the above mentioned National Council 1997 study, then noted in their report dated November 22, 2005, that in contrast, Houston’s Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) euthanizes approximately 80% of the animals entering its facilities.

Euthanasia rates at Houston’s private shelters are also high, ranging between approximately 45% and 85%.  You can view the report and the Mayor's response to the report at:
