1. Contact all area vet offices to see if an animal resembling yours has been reported.
2. Contact all area animal shelters and file a “lost/found” report.
3. Keep current pictures of your pets in case you ever lose one. If you find an animal, take pictures. These can be used for posters.
4. Post signs in and around your neighborhood - check with your local code-enforcement officer to see if there are any community restrictions...
5. Drive around surrounding areas looking for signs. According to www.petdetective.com, 32% of lost dogs are found over ten miles from home!!
6. Take signs to area post offices to see if they will post one in the break room! We all know how dogs “love” their mail carriers. Maybe one of the mail carriers will recognize the animal and know where he/she lives!
7. File reports on www.petfinder.com and www.petdetective.com. Check both websites for other postings. If you see a listing for an animal that even closely resembles the one you’ve found or lost, make contact. No one describes animals exactly the same. You may think an animal is blonde, another person might see that animal as more of a light red.
8. Take a hard copy of the poster to local area churches.
9. If you find a pure bred or identifiable pure bred mix, contact the breed rescue services. They will often place or help you place a lost dog.
10. If you have your pet microchipped, register with one of the Microchip Internet Networks (more on this on the Microchip and Pet ID Tags Link page).
